چکیده

It is often noted that the rise of C.S.F. pressure in response to compression of the jugular veins is variable and unpredictable. While doing routine lumbar punctures it was noticed that the amount of pressure rise seemed to depend on the side on which the patient was lying, and this report describes a study made to extend this observation. The subjects were I2 ward patients in whom there was no reason to suspect an abnormality of the circulation. of the C.S.F. or of the cerebral veins. Lumbar puncture was performed in the left lateral position with a wide gauge needle (17-I8 S.W.G. externally) and the pressure was recorded in a manometer of internal diameter about 2 mm. The patient rested until the pressure reached a steady reading. Compression was applied for 5 seconds by the fingers passed round the neck from behind and the pressure at the end of this time was recorded to the nearest 0.5 cm. The observation was repeated until a constant response was obtained. The patient was moved to the right lateral, and sometimes the sitting position and the measurement was repeated.

MR Elastography Can Be Used to Measure Brain Stiffness Changes as a Result of Altered Cranial Venous Drainage During Jugular Compression.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Compressing the internal jugular veins can reverse ventriculomegaly in the syndrome of inappropriately low pressure acute hydrocephalus, and it has been suggested that this works by "stiffening" the brain tissue. Jugular compression may also alter blood and CSF flow in other conditions. We aimed to understand the effect of jugular compression on brain tissue stiffness and...

Queckenstedt's Test Affects More than Jugular Venous Congestion in Rat

Jugular venous compression by the Queckenstedt's test (Q-test) increases the intracranial pressure, but the effects of isolated jugular venous congestion are not well known. Intraventricular pressure (IVP) was compared during direct obstruction of the common jugular veins (bilateral CJV clipping) and during external compression of bilateral CJV flows (Q-test) in a rat model. Intracerebroventric...

The efficacy of inferior vena cava diameters and the jugular vein in assessing fluid resuscitation

Objective: Fluid resuscitation is necessary in almost all critical patients. The central venous pressure (CVP) is a well-established method of assessing resuscitation. Recently, there have been attempts to investigate less invasive methods like the diameters of inferior vena cava (IVC) or the jugular vein. We aimed to investigate this method in our research. Methods: Seventy eight critical...

Facial Vein Draining Into External Jugular vein (Case Report)

Purpose: Circulatory system is very important because of injection, Blood transfer and centeral venous catheter insertion. The superficial veins, especially the external jugular vein (EJV) are increasingly being utilized for cannulation to conduct diagnostic procedures or intravenous therapies. The anomalous drainage of veins is of great significance for vascular surgeons and reconstructive sur...

Decreased jugular venous distensibility in migraine.

It has been demonstrated that internal jugular vein (IJV) compression aggravates headache intensity in patients of migraine. We hypothesized that patients with migraine may have veins that are less distensible; consequently, these veins are more likely to develop and transmit venous hypertension caused by the increased venous blood volume during IJV compression. We used ultrasonography to measu...
